World Habitat Day

Ahead of World Habitat Day on 2nd October, we’re reflecting on the importance of habitats and how, at Longbridge, we’re working hard to regenerate the urban habitat for those that live and work here.

“World Habitat Day is observed on the first Monday of October every year. It is recognised by the United Nations as a day to reflect on the state of towns and cities, and on the basic right of all to adequate shelter. It is also intended to remind the world that everyone has the power and the responsibility to shape the future of towns and cities” Wikipedia.

At Longbridge we are passionate about legacy and prosperity. The long-term regeneration of the area has inspired many changes to our town and supported it’s growing community.
The regeneration of our urban habitat takes into consideration the buildings people work in and the homes that they live in and the environment that is formed. Longbridge’s rich automotive history has inspired a diverse and dynamic mix of new work and business opportunities, paired with characterful new neighbourhoods. Longbridge continues to provide the highest quality of habitat for all people whether they’re busy inventing cars and developing new technologies in a state-of-the-art lab or playing with the kids on the living room floor!

Speaking of Longbridge’s rich history, Development Director Elliot Sellars said, “Our 100-year story has seen continuous progress, from pioneering car manufacturing processes to today’s cutting-edge scientific technologies – Longbridge has always been a trailblazer. The future looks to be no different as we continue to regenerate the area and build sustainable homes and buildings that will house generations to come”.

By delivering over 2,800 stylish new homes, from luxury apartments and townhouses to semi-detached and detached family dwellings, Longbridge makes sure that those who want to live here have every option available to them.

The companies that are relocating to Longbridge bring jobs to the area and boost the local economy. From Midlands-based businesses like Digbeth Dining Club’s new purpose-built events hub at Herberts Yard or bringing global business Waters Corporation’s new industry-leading scientific precision engineering centre to Longbridge Business Park, the shaping of Longbridge is both locally and internationally inspired, feeding into Birmingham’s growing reputation for great hospitality and an evolving life sciences and tech sector.

“It’s no secret that I champion the regeneration of Longbridge,” said Gary Sambrook, MP for Northfield. “I live here and am proud to call it my home. I witness the positive changes shaping the area every day and have nothing but admiration and support for the work St. Modwen and their associates carry out. Towns and cities up and down the country can learn a lot from the transformation of our town”.

The town centre boasts shops, public art, and events, as well as many amenities like the train station, bus and cycle routes that add to the high quality of life we want for every member of the community.

The commitment to the regeneration of Longbridge is further exemplified by the work St. Modwen have carried out along the river Rea to encourage biodiversity and the repopulation of the area by natural inhabitants.

Rivers have always been vital for human habitation, settlements historically run from a water source and are the beating heart of any major town or city. Less than 1.5 miles from the source of the Rea, Longbridge has bloomed multiple new parks and green spaces in the last decade.

The soon to be open River Rea Nature Trail has inspired further new habitations, St. Modwen have installed 25 bird boxes, 25 bat boxes, and 1 tawny owl box along a one-mile stretch of the river corridor, it has enhanced the natural habitat for numerous creatures.

Additionally, by the end of 2023 St. Modwen explain they will have planted over 3,000 trees in the last 18 months, all of which have been planted around Longbridge to add depth and diversity to the open spaces and greenery to the urban landscape.

Longbridge can be proud of its resilience, its ambition, and continuing to build habitats everyone and every thing wants to be a part of.
